Recommended Books by Merica House Residents

Chaos, fire-breathing dragons, tongue-lashings, a mysterious Mom Complex . . . it sounds like it could be a Harry Potter book.  It’s not.  The fire-breathing dragons, the chaos and the tongue-lashings all come from one of Cathy Parr’s favorite books, Slay Like A Mother:  How to Destroy Whats Holding You Back So You Can Live the Life You Want.  Cathy is heavily into self-improvement books, and Slay Like A Mother is at the top of her list of favorites.

Self-improvement books, T is for Transformation, Unleash the 7 Superpowers to Help You Dig Deeper, Feel Stronger and Live Your Best Life, by Shawn T. and Slay Like a Mother, How to Destroy What’s Holding You Back so You Can Live the Life you Want, by Katherine Wintsch.

Matthew Renfro, on the other hand, is into real fire-breathing dragons, at least as depicted by J.K. Rowling.  Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire is perhaps Matthew’s favorite book of all time, but he has enjoyed many of the other Harry Potter books.

Fantasy books, Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, by J. K. Rowling and The Secret Garden, by Frances Hodgson Burnett.

Each of the residents at Merica House is a dedicated reader.  Several spend hours each day listening to books on tape. The residents’ reading preferences vary.  Joe Durbin favors murder mysteries.  Deirdre Shields favors books that depict life in rural towns and ranching communities.  Maureen Shields is fond of coming-of-age stories.

Americana books, A Country Christmas and Promise, Texas, by Debbie Macomber.

Mystery and great adventure books, The Hatchet Series by Gary Paulsen.

Historical book, Catherine Parr, Wife, Widow, Mother, Survivor, the Story of the Last Queen of Henry VIII, by Elizabeth Norton (recommended by our very own Cathy Parr).
